The McLean County Museum of History hosts an annual cemetery walk to honor the rich history of Evergreen Cemetery and the lives of those buried there. For the 30th anniversary of this beloved community event, the Museum sought a t-shirt design rooted in the cemetery's monuments and incorporating classic headstone iconography.
I began by visiting Evergreen Cemetery and researching its historical monuments to understand their designs, symbolism, and cultural significance. This hands-on exploration informed my approach and ensured the design authentically represented the cemetery. As the main focus, I created a row of headstones based on actual monuments.
To highlight traditional headstone symbolism, I selected two common motifs: lilies, representing purity and renewal, and an upright torch, symbolizing life and remembrance. These icons were integrated into the design to evoke a sense of reverence and historical continuity, two things the Museum wanted to highlight.
For the typography, I chose fonts reminiscent of those engraved on historic headstones.
